I'm going to have to write this sooner than later, so it's time to rip the bandaid off. Time to come clean about my change of heart. I never, never, ever thought I'd say this, but...I've come to enjoy hanging my laundry on the line. Now that our weather is sunny and mild, I enjoy the walk outside, carrying the basket to the Roof Terrace, the meditative process of clipping the clothes, one by one, to the line. I can glance up now and then to check on the ocean - yep, still there. I enjoy the sun on the back of my neck, and I enjoy glancing up at the laundry hanging off the balconies of the condos behind us. I am one of them now. I take pleasure in this small connection to my Italian neighbors. Not to mention our savings in both money and electricity usage. A rough estimate of our drying costs is $1.25 per load of laundry. Since we do one load a day, we're saving more than $40/month, just by using the hanging line. Come summer and it's heat and humidity, maybe I won't enjoy it so much. Come winter, I definitely won't enjoy it and may return to my dryer days (especially if we have the 40 days of rain again!), but for now, our clothes hang wild and free...and I like it that way.
Oh I totally agree! Winter is awful for laundry in Italy, I use the dryer (we are so lucky to have) as minimally as possible, which means we end up with clothes hanging everywhere! Fresh sun-dried laundry is the best, yay for Spring!
